2007-2008

Lecturer, California College of the Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute. Teaching courses at foundation, intermediate and advanced levels in 3d Design, Sculpture and Interdisciplinary Studio. I co-created two courses; Mapping, and Regeneration and Repair, to engage fine arts, industrial design, graphic design and architecture students in interdisciplinary exploration.

Part-time Instructor. Teaching technical classes for adults in modeling, moldmaking and resin casting, concrete and cement sculpture, pewter casting and lifecasting at The Crucible, a non-profit educational collaborative in Oakland, CA. Highly technical instruction in a wide range of sculpture processes.

1986-2000

Sculpture production consultant and researcher, moldmaker, enlarger, sand caster, artist assistant. Self employed, worked closely with the Art Foundry, in Santa Fe, NM

  • Produced rubber, plaster, and life molds for lost wax bronze casting, clay and glass and resin casting, developed extensive sculpture production skills, and assisted artists in the production of works to be submitted to the molding process.
  • Developed deep knowledge of a wide range of sculpture materials, sources and applications, and honed troubleshooting and problem solving skills. Learned to adapt techniques to the needs of very different artists, and continually researched and experimented with new materials.
  • Gained insight from an unusual perspective into the creative processes of many internationally influential artists, among them Bruce Nauman, Kiki Smith, Gabriel Orozco, Meyer Vaisman, Rachel Whiteread and Juan Munoz. Trained and managed assistants. Assessed project costs and schedules, functioned as a key member of a highly skilled production team, often meeting tight deadlines.
  • Maintained and operated a moldmaking and casting studio.

Technical Expertise

Specific Skills include:

  • High level of moldmaking expertise, including rubber (silicone, latex, urethane), plaster, alginate, moulage, sand (oil and resin bonded).
  • Casting expertise, lost- wax bronze and aluminum, pewter, clay slip, plaster, resin, wax, cement, paper and rubber.
  • Good clay handbuilding, wax and clay modeling, enlarging, and armature assembling skills.
  • Welding, metal fabrication, chasing and patination skills.
  • Woodworking skills.
  • Good drawing skills, particularly drawing for design.
  • Digital skills include Photoshop, Illustrator, HTML and FinalCut Pro.
